Representatives from Embrapa Soja, the Paraná State Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapar), the Union and Organization of Cooperatives of the State of Paraná (Ocepar), and technical departments of Paraná cooperatives met on March 20, 2024, to discuss the problems of soybean stem breakage and grain rot affecting the 2023/2024 crop in Paraná.
Surveys conducted by cooperatives indicated that the area affected by stem breakage in the state was relatively small. However, a higher incidence of this issue was observed in the Vale do Ivaí region, especially in low-altitude areas where temperatures are higher. Municipalities such as Marumbi, Kaloré, Borrazopólis, São João do Ivaí, and São Pedro do Ivaí were the most affected, with reports of plants showing symptoms of stem breakage and streaks below the epidermis from the second ten days of December 2023.
Information from cooperatives highlighted that not all crops affected by stem breakage showed grain rot. These data corroborate with the Technical Note published by Embrapa Soja on February 2, 2024, which clarified aspects related to the issues, emphasizing the lack of sufficient data to prove the relationship between them.
Grain rot has been more frequent in the mid-north region of Mato Grosso state and in Rondônia, with varying severity between crops and cultivars. To address these challenges, Embrapa and its partner institutions have agreed to conduct joint trials in the 2024/2025 crop season, following a unique protocol defined and agreed upon, in order to obtain reliable data on the behavior of cultivars in relation to the mentioned issues and their possible causes.
This initiative aims to provide accurate and commercially unbiased information to the agricultural sector, with the goal of improving agricultural practices and mitigating the impacts of these problems on future soybean crops in Paraná.
