The ports of Paraná achieved yet another milestone in March, with 5,968,934 tons handled, marking an 11% increase compared to the same month last year (5,357,799 tons). This figure represents the eighth consecutive monthly record (year-over-year comparison) registered by the Paraná ports, which also led to the best year in the company's history in 2023 (65 million tons).

"In addition to the eight months of consecutive records, the numbers reveal a significant growth in 2024. In the first quarter alone, we saw a 16% increase compared to last year. That's over 16 million tons handled just this year," emphasized Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Port of Paraná. So far, 16,384,054 tons have been handled in 2024 (9,881,061 tons in exports and 6,502,993 tons in imports), 2,274,055 tons more than in 2023.

Soybeans and sugar commodities led the export movement in March. In total, 1,525,907 tons of soybeans were exported, compared to 1,204,720 tons in the same month last year, representing a 27% increase. Bulk sugar saw a significant market demand: from 93,000 tons in 2023 to 419,899 tons in 2024, a 352% increase. Bagged sugar also increased from 18,054 tons last year to 70,220 tons this year (a growth of 289%).

"Soybeans and sugar commodities drove exports not only in March, which was the best month of the year so far, but also in the first quarter of 2024. On the import side, fertilizer was the most handled cargo both in the month and in the first quarter of this year," highlighted Gabriel Vieira, Operations Director of Port of Paraná.

Fertilizer handling increased from 755,763 tons in 2023 to 888,506 tons in 2024, representing an 18% growth. The Port of Paranaguá continues to be the main gateway for the commodity in Brazil, accounting for 26% of the national movement in the period, according to the Brazilian foreign trade data query system (Comex Stat). The balance sheet of Port of Paraná also indicates a movement of 373,552 containers (TEUs) in the first quarter of 2024, a 38% growth compared to 2023 (271,024).
