Ports of Paraná in Brazil Set New Monthly Handling Record

The ports of Paranaguá and Antonina have reached a new historical milestone in cargo handling. In June this year, 6,582,670 tons were handled, representing a 3% increase compared to the previous record of 6,376,229 tons set in December last year. This marks the best monthly performance in the history of the Paraná ports.

“This achievement is the result of a very consolidated team effort, especially considering that we are in the rainiest region in Brazil, which forces us to suspend bulk cargo handling frequently. It’s challenging to achieve so many records under these conditions,” stated Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná. In exports, highlights include bulk sugar, with 669,380 tons, and soybeans, with 1,676,369 tons. The volume of bulk sugar grew by 15% compared to 2023 (582,094 tons), and soybeans increased by 6% compared to the same month last year (1,578,472 tons).

In imports, fertilizers and containers showed the highest volumes, with 4,777,376 tons and 63,600 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Paraná ports remain the main entry point for fertilizers in the country, with a 20% increase compared to June 2023 (727,282 tons). Containers showed a significant growth of 45% compared to June of the previous year (394,557 tons).

Gabriel Vieira, Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná, emphasized that these results are the fruit of operational and engineering planning adopted by the company, which has earned Paraná ports four consecutive awards for best port management from the federal government. “June proved to be a month of significant movement in both exports and imports, and the outlook for the second half of the year is even better,” he said.

The largest investment by Portos do Paraná to bring greater speed and efficiency to rail operations is Moegão. This project will expedite grain operations, positively impacting the total volume handled at the Paranaguá terminal.

“This is the largest port intervention currently underway in Brazil, with an estimated cost of R$ 592 million, funded by Portos Paraná,” explained Luiz Fernando Garcia. “The new rail unloading facility is being installed in an area of almost 600,000 square meters and will centralize the unloading of trains arriving at the Port of Paranaguá.” The completion is expected in the second half of 2025.
